About LANS

Los Alamos National Laboratory is managed and operated by Los Alamos National Security, LLC (LANS), under contract to the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).

LANS comprises four top U.S. organizations that are partnering to support delivery of NNSA's mission at LANL:

  • University of California
  • Bechtel National, Inc.
  • BWX Technologies, Inc.

Each organization has extensive experience in nuclear defense programs, scientific research and development, large-scale facilties management, applying science and technology to homeland security challenges, and safety and security. The combined record of accomplishments and awards is unmatched in both science and industry.

The four parent organizations provide oversight of LANS performance through the Board of Governors, and functional managers of the parent organization provide reach-back capabilities to corporate resources to provide best practices, processes, systems, and tools.

The mission of Los Alamos National Security, LLC is to provide leadership enabling effective management of key mission, science and technology, fundamental operations, and business programs of the Los Alamos National Laboratory to meet national security science demands and deliver outstanding results.

University of California

In addition to Los Alamos, UC manages Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and is a partner managing Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. BWXTBWX Technologies, Inc. (BWXT) manages complex, high-consequence nuclear and national security operations, including nuclear production facilities and the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Headquartered in Lynchburg, Virginia, and with regional offices in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, BWXT operates three distinct businesses: managing and operating large manufacturing or site closure contracts for the U.S. government, facilitating laboratory services, and managing technical services.
